Early Life of Lata Mangeshkar
Lata Mangeshkar was born to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti on 28 September 1929. Her birthplace is Indore. Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was a theatre actor and classical singer. Lata’s grandfather Ganesh Bhatt Navathe Hardikar was a priest in Mangueshi Temple situated in Goa. Lata was born as Hema but later her parents changed the name. Lata Mangeshkar is the eldest of her siblings. Her siblings Hridayanath, Meena, Asha, and Usha are big names in the arena of the music industry. Her father Deenanath Mangeshkar was her first teacher. Lata started working as an actress in musical plays at the age of five.
Singing Career of Lata Mangeshkar
Lata lost her father at the age of 13. Her family was taken care of by Master Vinayak who was her father’s friend. Master Vinayak helped Lata to start her career in the music and acting industry. Lata got a small role in the Marathi movie Pahili Mangalaa gaur (1942). Lata sang her first song ‘ Mata Ek Sapoot ki Duniya’ for a Marathi Movie in 1943.
Lata started her training for Hindustani classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan. In her early career, Lata got an opportunity to sing in Aap ki Seva Mein ( 1946). In the 1950s and 60s, the iconic singer gave her voice to all the top actresses in Bollywood. Madhumati, Aasha, Amardeep, Baagi, Mughal e Aazam, Pocketmaar, Bees Saal Baad, Adalat, Jailor are some of the names from a vast list of hit movies she delivered in the early decades of her career.
Proceeding to the 90s, Lata worked for music directors like Jatin-Lalit, Adesh Srivastava, Anu Malik, A R Rehman, and so on. Lata Mangeshkar even started her own production house in 1990. One of the noteworthy facts is that Lata Mangeshkar has lent her voice for almost all the major hits of Yash Chopra.
